Qatari Nasser Khalifa al-Atya will be in action on the Ford Fiesta R5 at the Nicosia-based Cyprus Rally, which starts on Friday.
This week’s competition will be the fourth round of the 2021 FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC). Al-Atya and his co-pilot Ata Al-Hamoud took part in the third round of the MERC organized in Lebanon earlier this month. Other participants in the three-day event this week include Dakar rally star and regional champion Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah (Volkswagen) of Qatar, Abdullah al-Rawahi of Oman Rally Team, Turkish Raul Denktas (Hyundai i20), the local Petrolina Racing Team duo of Alex Tsouloftas and Simos Galatariotis in their Volkswagen Polo R5s in a strong 32-car field that includes many local drivers.
Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah leads the MERC driver standings with 120 points ahead of Kuwaiti Mshari al-Thefiri, who has 74 points. Lebanese Alex Feghali is third with 59 points while Nasser Khalifa al-Atya is fourth with 42 points. The Cyprus Rally will kick off today with a starting ceremony in downtown Nicosia. The Cypriot Automobile Association (CAA) mapped out 12 stages on gravel over the weekend. Two loops of three stages of 6.19 km (Nikatari), 20.07 km (Kapouras) and 21.21 km (Kourdali) constitute the opening stage tomorrow. The crews will tackle three winding stages of 13.01 km (Lythrodontas), 19.02 km (Ayios Ephifanios) and 10.96 km (Ayia Marina) twice on Sunday.
